There are many reasons why Adelaide is the best cycling holiday in Australia and it’s not just a coincidence that 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Santos Tour down Under World Tour bike race!
It’s amazing how quickly time passes when you spend your life by bike, it only seems like yesterday when Practice Bicycle first enjoyed riding the roads of South Australia. It was 2005 – went for a week and stayed for six! Unbelievable cycling experience really and pretty much sums up the #1 cycling holiday destination in Australia.
Fortunately with a little bit of good judgement we stayed amongst the vineyards of McLaren Vale (pure luck of course) it was the perfect environment to ride the bike and chill, although it was very serious riding at the time, taking on Willunga Hill, hammering the Aldinga Beach road, all preparation for the Australian Road Championships (Echunga – 3rd Place).
It was now time to celebrate ‘Hugh Hamilton – Rascal Shiraz’ flowed freely that week-end, I guess there must be something in the Rascal Shiraz , we certainly didn’t want to leave Adelaide. We postponed additional cycling commitments in the Snowy Mountains & Gold Coast hinterland and since then we have never looked back.
Exploring the wonderful area at a slower pace by bike, gives you a real relationship with Australia a unique experience in so many ways the perfect bike tour ‘down under’! The Coromandel Valley to Belair with great views over looking the flat city of Adelaide or further East into the Adelaide Hills and our very first taste of the local pastie in Hahndorf, equal to any Cornish Pastie! Head South and you hit Victor Harbor on the South of the Fleurieu Peninsula with it’s horse drawn tram that takes you across to the island.
It’s easy to understand why a cycling holiday in Australia must be on every bodies wish list…
